Caldera: Mist through your consciousness

08/09/08  ||  Kampfar

Caldera is a word somehow related to volcanic activity, but it had nothing to do with humans on fire or melting, so naturally I lost my interest rather quickly. It is a pretentious name, obviously I know, though when compared to the title they have chosen for this debut – one making it sound like an artsy load of bullcrap, with ringworms – Caldera suddenly starts to both look and sound good. I bet it comes as no surprise when I tell you this lot hails from France.

It did surprise me, however, to discover a stoner band from said country not sucking donkey balls while eating cheese. Actually, this is the first band of such sorts I’ve come across from France. And it is also almost the first instrumental stoner shit I have ever enjoyed. Almost, because I just remembered I dig Bongripper’s “Hippie killer” circa as much.

So, some words about the actual album then? No problem, twatcunt.

“Mist through your consciousness” is not the album to play if you want yer party to break out in a riot, that’s for insanely sure. Insanely, as I discovered – without any wow’s or bravado, certainly not much of a discovery – this album to be best suited when in need of relaxation and calm. I just made it sound like a wimper, so now I must stress this platter to be circa 70% heavy and 30% atmosphere. And it also packs energy and drive. Nothing of this, however, change that I best enjoy “MTYC” if killing the lights and getting into a comfy, horizontal position.

It might not sound as much to grasp and digest, but I’m adamant that semi-serious attention is required if you are to get all the details needed to fully flesh out and enjoy this dish. Or perhaps not having shitty, old ears would help? What do I know?

Probably more than you, asshole.

This fine piece of music with a shitty name is also masterly produced, very masterly, balanced as a world class line dancer and detailed as a HD recording it is. Which is especially good since all members is worth their placing in the mix. Much like you aren’t worth the air you’re breathing.

Check this out if you are a fan of stoner/doom on the lookout for something not tarnished by crap vocals.

8 out of 10.
